Chapter 15 - What the Cameras Could Prove

The footage didn't prove what I feared. I made myself say that aloud.

"It shows he was there," I told Lena later. "It doesn't show he hurt Daniel."

"Correct," she said. "We follow evidence, not conclusions."

That mattered. Grief could turn any shadow into a monster. I needed the truth, even if the truth was smaller or stranger than my anger.

The recovered clip showed Daniel entering 904 with an envelope and a laptop bag. Minutes later Martin came in, argued with him in the sitting area, and left holding the envelope. Daniel remained upright, speaking angrily on his phone. He appeared physically distressed, but the image was silent.

"What did he say?" I asked.

"We can't know from this recording," Lena replied. "We're seeking phone records and medical documentation."

My chest ached with the old unanswered questions. Daniel had died in the hospital after a sudden cardiac event. The medical findings had been clear. I wouldn't turn his death into a crime just because a dishonest man had been nearby.

"What we can prove," Lena continued, "is tampering with records, a threat sent to you through a hotel-linked device, and unlawful restraint involving Rosa. We're following the money."

At the hotel, Audrey asked to speak to me privately. She looked as though she had aged years overnight.

"I signed the dismissal form for Lucia," she said. "Martin told me she stole from guests. I never saw the evidence. I chose the easy answer."

"Why are you telling me now?"

"Because Rosa could have died behind that wall. And I kept saying I was just doing my job."

She handed Priya a printed access log she'd preserved before the system was wiped. One user had authorized the camera interruption and the order against me.
