Chapter 7 - The Room Nobody Wanted Me to See

I caught Rosa in the corridor. "What wall?"

She looked toward the service elevators. "I shouldn't have given you that."

"Did someone ask you to?"

"No." She swallowed. "My sister cleaned Suite 904 for six years. Three weeks ago she found a panel open behind the minibar. The next day she was fired for stealing. She never took a thing."

"What's her name?"

"Lucia."

"What was behind the panel?"

"I don't know. But people started coming in after midnight, even when the suite was empty."

Footsteps approached. Rosa straightened and wheeled her supply cart away.

Naomi called back. "Corporate security has frozen the old login, but it was used to authorize a vendor payment, too. One hundred eighty thousand dollars."

"To whom?"

"A company called Larkspur Facilities."

I knew the name. It had appeared on repair invoices Daniel once complained were too high. Back then, Martin had assured us the contract was essential. I had let it go while Daniel was sick.

Now the same company was tied to my husband's credentials.

Audrey opened the conference-room door. "I've arranged a room on the eighth floor."

"I booked 904."

"That suite is unavailable."

"Then why did your system confirm it?"

"Maintenance."

"Funny," I said. "You didn't mention maintenance at the desk."

A crash sounded down the service corridor. We hurried toward it. Rosa's cart lay on its side. Towels were scattered across the floor, and her phone was smashed beneath a wheel.

Rosa herself was gone.

On the wall beside the elevator, a fresh scuff marked where someone had dragged something heavy.

Then my phone lit up with an unknown number: STOP ASKING ABOUT 904, OR YOUR DAUGHTER WILL LEARN WHAT HAPPENED TO HER FATHER.
