Chapter 11 - What Evelyn Hid

“I don't have the documents,” Adrian told the screen.
Evelyn lifted her head. Her face was bruised, but her voice was steady.
“You do,” she said. “I left them where you always said nothing important belonged.”
The feed went black.
Adrian stood motionless. Then he remembered a ridiculous argument from their first year of marriage: Evelyn insisting they keep a box of old recipes in the kitchen safe. He had laughed and called it the least important thing they owned.
He ran downstairs. The safe was behind a loose pantry panel. Inside lay handwritten recipes, their wedding vows, and a flash drive taped to a card labeled APPLE PIE.
Naomi plugged it into an offline laptop. Names filled the screen. Payments. Patient files. Forged signatures. A trail leading through the Vale Foundation and a shell company controlled by Marcus.
Then Naomi opened the last folder.
“Adrian,” she whispered. “Your father's signature is on every authorization.”
Their father, Richard Vale, had been dead for four years.
The painting had been an anniversary gift from a gallery owner who wanted Adrian's investment. It showed a crooked orange sailboat under a green sky. Adrian had called it the ugliest thing he'd ever seen. Evelyn had hung it above the pantry door, saying that a house full of expensive objects needed at least one thing that made people laugh.
He climbed onto a stool and lifted it from the wall. Behind the frame was a shallow recess. Inside lay a flash drive wrapped in wax paper and a folded note. Evelyn's handwriting said: If you're reading this, believe the evidence before you believe anyone who shares your last name. Adrian read it twice. He felt her presence in the practical sharpness of the instruction, and for a moment the grief was so strong he couldn't stand.

Adrian stopped the audio. 'I sat across from these people at dinner,' he said. Naomi looked at him. 'You didn't know what they were doing. But now you do.' He nodded and made the decision he'd been avoiding: he would hand over every record, even those that might implicate his own company. Protecting the Vale name had already cost too many people their lives.
The newest authorization was dated yesterday.
