Chapter 14 - The Brother He Knew

Adrian raised both hands. “You don't want to do this.”

Marcus laughed bitterly. “You have no idea what I want.”

“I know you taught me to ride a bike. I know you stayed up all night when Mom was dying. I know you were my brother before you became this.”

For a moment Marcus's grip wavered.

Sloane stepped backward toward the jet. Hannah's officers moved around the hangar, weapons lowered but ready.

“Tell him,” Marcus snapped at Sloane. “Tell him who started it.”

Sloane's face tightened. “Your father built the program. I kept it running. You took the money.”

“And Elena?” Rosa's voice rang from behind a police barricade. She had come with another officer after refusing to stay away.

Marcus looked at her. “Elena threatened to expose us. Sloane ordered her silenced.”

Sloane bolted. An officer tackled him near the plane stairs.

The gun swung wildly. Hannah shouted. Adrian lunged forward, catching Marcus's wrist as a shot cracked across the airfield.

Marcus had always hated being the second son, even though he was older. Richard trusted Adrian with the company and Marcus with public appearances. The resentment had grown quietly for years, disguised as jokes about the golden boy. Standing on the wet concrete, Adrian finally heard the old bitterness without its friendly wrapping.

'You got the company, the wife, the kid, the perfect life,' Marcus shouted. 'And I got to clean up Father's messes.' Adrian kept his hands raised. 'You could have come to me.' 'You would have called the police.' 'Yes,' Adrian said. 'I would have.' Marcus flinched at the answer.

'Elena was your friend,' Adrian told Marcus. 'She grew up in our kitchen. Rosa fed you when Mom was in the hospital.' Marcus swallowed. 'I didn't order her death.' 'But you helped bury her under my wife's name.' Marcus stared at the gun. For a moment his face looked young and terrified, the brother Adrian had once pulled from a freezing lake. Then Sloane shouted that the plane was leaving, and Marcus's finger tightened.

Evelyn screamed his name.
