Chapter 6 - Angela's Message

At 11:08 p.m., Angela Pierce's husband called the estate.

Vincent put him on speaker.

"She never came home," the man said. "She texted me at three saying she had to fix something at work. Then nothing."

"Did she sound afraid?" Dominic asked.

A long pause.

"She asked me to take our son to my sister's. I thought she was being dramatic."

Mercer closed his eyes.

"Did she leave anything?"

"She sent an email with no words. Just an attachment. I couldn't open it."

Vincent had him forward the message to an isolated computer.

The attachment was an audio file.

Static filled the room.

Then Angela's voice.

"If you're hearing this, I was right to be scared."

Clare stood near the back of the security room with Ellie asleep against her shoulder.

Dominic listened without moving.

"Mr. Vale's brace has been altered at least four times. I fixed it twice and documented both incidents. The entries disappeared. Someone told me to stop correcting the fit unless Dr. Mercer specifically ordered it. That instruction came through an internal administrative account."

Vincent looked at Mercer.

Mercer whispered, "Not mine."

Angela continued.

"Yesterday I saw Mr. Voss in the therapy wing after Mrs. Rowan stepped into the supply closet. I didn't see him touch the brace. But after he left, the lower plate had been reversed again."

Arthur, seated under guard in the conference room, could not hear the recording.

Dominic wished he could.

"I made copies of the therapy logs," Angela said. "I put them where the old house keeps its dead secrets."

The file ended.

Vincent frowned. "What does that mean?"

Dominic knew.

"The wine cellar."

The Vale estate had been built in 1912 by an industrialist who hid liquor during Prohibition. Behind the current wine room was a narrow stone storage chamber most staff did not know existed.

Dominic led Vincent and two guards downstairs.

His leg hurt less without the sabotaged brace, but every stair reminded him the injury was real even if someone had made it worse.

They reached the cellar.

A false rack swung open behind a row of expensive Barolo.

Inside the hidden room stood old cabinets, estate records, and dust-covered steel boxes.

Vincent swept his flashlight across the shelves.

"What are we looking for?"

Dominic scanned the room.

Then he saw something new.

A yellow rehabilitation resistance band tied around the handle of one cabinet.

Angela's marker.

Vincent pulled it open.

Inside were photocopied therapy sheets, lab reports, and a flash drive.

On top lay a photograph.

Dominic picked it up.

It showed his wrecked SUV from the crash eleven weeks earlier.

The front wheel assembly had been circled in red.

Across the bottom Angela had written three words:

ASK ABOUT THE BOLTS.

Vincent stared at the picture.

"Boss..."

Dominic felt the temperature in the cellar drop.

The brace was not the beginning.

The crash was.
