Chapter 1 - The Hand Beneath the Sheet

"My mom is inside that cart."

The six-year-old said it so quietly that Nico Rivas, the man Manhattan still called a mob boss, almost missed it. Then he looked at the security monitor and saw a woman's hand slip out from under a white laundry sheet.

"Stop the video," he said.

Dahlia Park, his head of security, froze the image at 1:17 a.m. In the grainy footage, a housekeeper in a navy uniform pushed an oversized laundry cart along the twelfth-floor service hall. The cart rolled past three locked doors toward a freight elevator.

A little girl sat on the edge of Nico's desk, clutching a battered stuffed rabbit. She stared as if she could make the screen change.

"What's your name, sweetheart?" Nico asked.

"Sophie. Sophie Reed."

"And your mother's name?"

"Mara. She cleans your hotel." Sophie pointed again. "That's her bracelet. The blue one with the silver star. I made it at school."

Nico stepped closer. He could barely make out a sliver of blue beneath the sheet. Then he noticed fingers curled around the cart's rim.

"Where did you see this?" he asked Dahlia.

"The concierge found Sophie by the linen closet. She said her mother was missing. I brought her upstairs because I didn't want the night manager questioning her."

"Good decision. Run the footage forward."

The woman pushing the cart reached the elevator. For three seconds, her face turned toward the camera. She wore Mara Reed's identification badge, but the badge was clipped backward. She pressed the elevator button with her left hand.

Sophie shook her head so hard her ponytail came loose.

"That's not Mommy."

Nico felt the room tighten around him.

"How do you know?"

"Mommy hurt her left wrist. She can't push heavy things with that hand." Sophie swallowed. "And that lady had the wrong shoes. Mommy's have pink laces."

Dahlia enlarged the frame. White sneakers. Black laces. A woman wearing another woman's badge.

Nico knew liars. A frightened child who noticed shoelaces worried him more.

"Did anybody see you come up here?" he asked.

Sophie hugged her rabbit, Patch.

"The lady did. She told me to go to bed. Then Mommy knocked three times from under the sheet." Sophie's eyes filled. "That's our knock. She does it on my bedroom door."

Nico reached for the office phone. "Lock down the freight elevators. Nobody leaves Ashford House without my approval."

Dahlia was already moving.

The elevator closed. A digital label flashed: B2.

"Basement two," Dahlia said. "The old loading level."

Nico knew that floor. He had ordered it closed after a flood three years ago.

Before he could speak, his private phone lit up with a message from his younger half-brother, Gideon.

Stop looking for the maid. If you want the girl alive, come alone.
