Chapter 16 - The Address on the Screen

"Move her," Simone ordered into the radio. "Move the child now."

At the Brooklyn apartment, Tessa heard the order through the detective's phone and reached for Sophie's shoes.

"Are we going to Mommy?" Sophie asked.

"Yes. But first we're going somewhere safer."

A van slowed at the curb. Its side door slid open, and a man in a gray jacket stepped onto the sidewalk. Ms. Ortega locked the apartment door and guided Sophie through the rear stairwell, where two officers were already waiting.

They were gone before the man reached the building's entrance.

From the back seat of the police car, Sophie watched the streets pass in silence. Finally she whispered, "Did they find her?"

Tessa looked at Ms. Ortega, who nodded.

"Yes," Tessa said. "Your mom is alive."

Sophie didn't cheer. She turned her face toward the window and cried so hard that Tessa had to help her breathe.

At the medical center, Mara received fluids and treatment for her injuries. Doctors expected her to recover from a mild concussion and exhaustion. She insisted on giving a statement as soon as she could hold a pen.

Simone sat beside the bed. "Who knew about the safe apartment?"

"No one," Mara replied. "Not even me."

"Then someone following our transport learned the location. We're reviewing all the vehicle and camera records."

Nico arrived without an entourage. He stood by the door until Mara noticed him.

"You own the place where they took me," she said.

"I do."

"Your signature is on the contract."

"It is."

"If you're here expecting me to thank you, you can leave."

He swallowed. "I'm here because Sophie asked me to give this back."

He set the blue star bracelet on her bedside table.

Mara picked it up with shaking fingers.

"Where is she?"

"On her way to you. With people Simone trusts."

Mara drew a long breath. "Then there's one thing I need you to do before she gets here."

"Name it."

"Stop calling what happened a mistake. Someone made money from it. Find out exactly who."

Nico nodded. "I will."

As he turned to leave, Mara added, "And Mr. Rivas?"

He looked back.

"I kept copies of everything. Gideon doesn't know where the originals are."
