Chapter 8 - The Room That Shouldn't Exist

Damon knew the driver as Michael Haines.
Forty-one. Former state police. Two daughters in private school. No disciplinary history. Passed every background review for six years.
The kind of employee whose file became invisible because nothing in it demanded attention.
"He reported his own getaway car," Diego said.
"He reported a decoy."
Anton zoomed the traffic image.
Haines wore an earpiece.
Mara sat rigid beside Adrian, hands hidden.
No Victor.
"We still assume Pier Nine?" Anton asked.
"We assume Victor wants us there," Damon said. "That is different."
Sophie tugged his sleeve.
"Can I have a marker?"
Damon looked at her.
"Now?"
"Black."
Anton handed her one from the conference table.
Sophie drew a thick line across her paper map, then another below it.
"Mom said water has two floors."
Diego frowned. "Water doesn't have floors."
"She knows. She said grown-ups would say that."
Damon studied the drawing.
Top line: pier.
Bottom line: lower customs level.
Sophie added three circles under the bottom line.
"She made me remember these. Big round windows. But they're not windows because you can't see through them."
"Storm culverts," Anton said. "Old flood-control pipes."
Damon nodded.
If the lower customs floor had sealed culverts opening toward the river, a small maintenance craft could approach unseen from beneath the pier.
"Get me harbor plans."
Anton started searching.
Damon looked at Diego.
"You and I go by water. Anton builds a visible convoy to Pier Nine. Make it loud. Make Victor think I am angry."
"You are angry."
"Make it less elegant."
Anton grinned. "Finally, a task suited to me."
"Sophie stays here."
She crossed her arms.
"No."
"We had this discussion."
"And then you changed your mind."
"I'm changing it back."
"Mom said you would."
Damon's patience thinned.
"Did your mother leave instructions for every sentence I might say?"
"Almost."
"What did she say about this?"
Sophie looked at him carefully.
"She said if you try to leave me somewhere safe, tell you there isn't anywhere safe until you find the room with no door inside the room with no door."
Damon went still.
Room Seventeen was the room with no door.
Inside it, they had seen walls of surveillance materials.
He had not checked for another hidden space.
"Anton."
"I'll take her back."
"No. We all go."
Thirty minutes later they were beneath the estate again.
The convoy to Pier Nine had already departed with three armored SUVs, enough visible men to satisfy any camera Victor controlled.
Meanwhile Damon, Sophie, Diego, Anton, and Warden stood in Room Seventeen.
They searched the walls.
Nothing.
Desk.
Nothing.
Floor.
Nothing.
Sophie walked to the old family portrait near the rear wall.
Carlo Castellano sat in the center.
Victor stood behind his right shoulder.
Damon's father, Gabriel, behind his left.
A teenage Damon stood at the edge, thin and unsmiling.
Sophie pointed to Gabriel.
"You look like him."
"People say that."
"He looks nicer."
"People say that too."
She tapped the frame.
Three. Pause. Two.
Warden walked to the portrait and sat.
Damon took it down.
Behind it was a narrow brass slot.
The metronome key from Warden's training pouch fit perfectly.
Damon turned it.
A section of wall rotated inward.
Inside was a second room no larger than a closet.
The room with no door inside the room with no door.
One wooden metronome sat on a shelf.
A reel-to-reel tape machine beneath it.
And a metal lockbox engraved G.C.
Gabriel Castellano.
Damon picked up the metronome.
It was old, walnut, heavy.
He wound it.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Sophie covered her ears.
"Mom hates that sound."
"Why?"
"She says it means somebody is deciding."
Damon opened the lockbox.
Inside were letters sealed in plastic.
One addressed to Mara.
One to Damon.
One to Elena.
The last had never been opened.
Damon opened his.
The paper was thirteen years old.
Son,
If you are reading this, then I failed to get us out cleanly. Your grandfather believes power is the ability to make other people accept your cost. Victor believes power is the ability to hide the cost. I spent too long believing I could stay near them without becoming part of what they were.
Do not make my mistake.
Mara has the ledger. Elena has the second copy. If Elena is pregnant, keep her away from this family. If the child is yours, the kindest thing you may ever do is let that child grow up without your name.
Damon stopped reading.
His fingers were numb.
Sophie looked at him.
"What?"
He continued.
One more thing. Mara is not merely an employee. She is the only witness who knows Victor arranged Atlantic City. Trust her even when she gives you reason not to. Especially then.
Gabriel.
Diego let out a slow breath.
Anton stared at the metronome.
"Your old man knew."
"He knew enough to die for it."
Sophie pointed at Elena's unopened letter.
"That's hers?"
Damon nodded.
"Can I see it?"
He hesitated.
Then gave it to her.
The envelope had a line written on the back.
MARA - IF ELENA CANNOT TAKE THE CHILD, YOU DO.
Sophie's eyes widened.
"Mara knew."
"Yes."
"She lied to me."
"Maybe she kept a promise."
Sophie looked angry again.
"Same thing sometimes."
Damon had no argument.
Anton found a tiny flash drive taped beneath the lockbox lid.
He plugged it into his laptop.
One video file opened.
Gabriel appeared, younger than Damon remembered him at death.
Mara sat beside him.
Elena sat on the other side.
Pregnant.
Damon's chest tightened.
Gabriel said, "We are recording this because Victor has someone inside Damon's circle. We don't know who."
Mara looked into the old camera.
"If this survives and I don't, follow the money from the legal defense trust. The traitor is paid through protection, not profit."
Elena placed a hand over her stomach.
"And if Damon sees this, tell him I didn't leave. Tell him I tried."
The video skipped.
A final frame appeared.
A list of trust beneficiaries.
One name had received annual payments for seven years.
MICHAEL HAINES.
Below it was a second name.
DIEGO RUIZ.
Everyone in the room turned toward Diego.
Sophie stopped breathing.
Warden stood.
Diego slowly raised both hands.
May you like
"Damon," he said, "I can explain."
