Chapter 12 - The Child in the Photograph

For one stunned moment I thought the worst: that Sophie had been stolen as a baby. Adrian read the back of the photograph and shook his head. The infant wasn't Sophie. It was a boy named Caleb Mercer, born seven years earlier to a nurse who later disappeared from Saint Gabriel's staff.
“Evelyn's cousin had a little boy named Caleb,” Adrian said. “We lost contact after a family dispute.”
The miniature book documented suspicious guardianship papers, charity reimbursements, and an insurance payout issued under Caleb's name. Someone had listed Evelyn as a legal witness despite her being out of the country at the time. The same signature appeared on warehouse contracts signed after her death.
“It's not one forgery,” Naomi said. “It's a system.”
Price's team traced a school enrollment record for Caleb. He was living with a foster family under a protective placement arranged after his mother reported threats. The family was safe, but the boy's mother had disappeared. The evidence pointed toward a network that used stolen identities to move payments and property without attracting attention.
Adrian looked sick. “My wife's family, my own company, a child I should have known was in trouble. How much did I refuse to see?”
I wanted to say none of it was his fault. That would have been easy and false. “You can look now,” I said.
The kidnappers called at midnight. Sophie appeared for just a few seconds before a man took the phone. His voice was filtered, but the rhythm was familiar. He ordered Adrian to bring the smaller book to an abandoned theater near the river.
Price's team was already tracking the transmission. The call originated from a moving vehicle. A traffic camera caught the blue sedan entering a parking structure beside the theater.

As the officers moved into position, an audio message arrived from Sophie's device. It was faint and full of static, but her voice was clear enough.
“Olivia, the lady has Daddy's picture. She says he's the reason Mommy died.”
