Chapter 18 - What Evelyn Heard

We played the recovered audio twice in Naomi's conference room. The voice wasn't Marcus's. It wasn't Charles's. It was Holt's, speaking from just beyond Evelyn's camera. In the missing portion, Evelyn demanded to know who had given him orders. Holt answered, “Your father-in-law knows every number. Marcus handles the money. I handle the mistakes.”
Evelyn said, “My daughter isn't a mistake.”
Then came a sound of furniture moving and the hurried click of the recording ending. Nothing in the audio proved Holt had been in the room on the night of Evelyn's death, but it showed the threat to Sophie began long before the staged knife incident.
Adrian listened without moving. When it ended, he asked Naomi to give him a moment. I followed him into the hall because I couldn't stand the thought of him facing that silence alone.
“I spent eleven months thinking she was angry with me,” he said. “She stopped telling me where she went. She changed her passwords. The night before the crash, we argued.”
“What did you say?”
“That I couldn't live with someone who didn't trust me.”
He looked at the floor. “I was wrong about what she was hiding.”
I didn't try to erase his regret. I told him what my father had said after waking: Evelyn had asked Owen to keep Adrian out of the evidence chain until they could identify which board members were compromised. Her silence was a choice made under pressure, not a judgment on Adrian's worth.
The investigation accelerated. Financial auditors linked the counterfeit shipments to offshore accounts. Medical regulators and prosecutors prepared cases against the responsible executives. Former workers came forward after learning Owen had survived. Rachel entered witness protection after giving formal testimony.
Then Holt made contact with Naomi. He said he would surrender and testify against Charles if Sophie was protected and investigators checked a storage locker he had rented years before.
“Why should we trust him?” Adrian asked.
May you like
“We shouldn't,” Naomi said. “But we should check what he says.”
Inside the locker, officers found a sealed envelope addressed in Evelyn's handwriting to Adrian. On the back she had written: OPEN ONLY AFTER HE TELLS THE TRUTH.
