Chapter 16 - Ten Minutes

Adrian stood so quickly the chair struck the wall. Through the adjoining room, I heard Naomi call for the officers. Charles looked almost amused.

“I'm an old man,” he said. “You'd really drag me into a courtroom?”

“You threatened my daughter,” Adrian answered. “You've already made the decision for me.”

Officers entered and secured Charles's phone. The threat was documented, but nobody knew whether anyone outside was prepared to act on it. Price ordered Sophie's protective detail to move her to a new location. Mrs. Bell took her through a service exit with two officers.

For six minutes we heard nothing. Then one of the escort vehicles stopped responding.

I called Mrs. Bell again and again. On the fourth attempt she answered, whispering. “Traffic's blocked. A delivery truck turned sideways across the road. The officers are handling it. Sophie is under the seat.”

“Stay down,” I told her. “Don't open a door for anyone except the officers you're with.”

Adrian listened beside me, face white. Then Mrs. Bell said, “I can see another police car.” The connection broke.

Price sent reinforcements. The blocking truck was discovered to be stolen, its driver gone. But Mrs. Bell and Sophie were moved safely to a nearby station, where investigators confirmed their identities before transferring them to protection. No one had reached Sophie.

Adrian let out a shaking breath and sat on the floor. “My father tried to use her as a bargaining chip.”

“Yes,” I said. “Now he knows it won't work.”

Investigators obtained warrants for Charles's foundation accounts. They seized servers and banking records. Marcus was arrested trying to board a private charter, but Holt remained missing.

At dawn, I got another message from an unlisted number. It contained a photograph of the original knife, now inside a police evidence locker.
