Chapter 19 - The Truth Under Oath

Holt surrendered at a state police station with his attorney present. His first account was full of omissions. Price pressed him on the timing, the altered camera logs, the stolen authorization letter, and the false shipment records until his story finally stopped shifting.

Charles had approved the scheme, Marcus had routed payments, and Holt had carried out intimidation. When Evelyn threatened to disclose the operation, Holt arranged for her car to be tampered with. He insisted he hadn't meant to kill her. The investigators left that claim for prosecutors and the court to evaluate.

I heard the admissions from an adjoining interview room. Every sentence made my stomach turn. I thought of Sophie falling asleep with a photograph in her arms, waiting for her mother to come home.

Adrian chose not to watch Holt's interview. He stayed with Sophie while doctors and counselors helped her settle into a routine. She had begun sleeping through the night again. Once, she laughed so hard at a silly cartoon that Mrs. Bell started crying at the kitchen sink.

Charges were filed over the trafficking scheme, fraud, abduction, conspiracy, and Evelyn's death. The legal process would take time. Investigators warned us that some charges might change as evidence was tested in court. But the central facts could no longer be buried by one powerful family's denials.

Naomi opened Evelyn's envelope with Adrian. Inside was a short letter, written months before the crash.

Adrian, if someone finally tells you the truth, please believe that I wanted to come home. Every night I imagined you and Sophie waiting at the kitchen table. I am frightened, but I am not leaving you by choice. If I cannot finish this, let the evidence speak louder than anyone's name. And let our girl grow up knowing that courage is not the absence of fear. It is deciding she matters more than fear does.

Adrian read the letter aloud to Sophie. She touched the paper gently and asked if they could plant a rose for her mother.

He promised they would.

Later that evening Price called. Marcus had requested a meeting and offered a signed statement. He wanted to identify the person who had been quietly paying Holt's bills after Charles's arrest.

The name wasn't another Vale.

It was someone still living inside the house.
