Chapter 14 - Ruth’s Briefcase

Ruth Morgan looked ten years older than she had the week before.
She sat in a private hospital room with a bandage at her temple and both hands wrapped around a paper cup of coffee.
Jenna walked in and hugged her without speaking.
For a long moment, Ruth held her daughter like she was the child.
Then she looked at Ethan.
“You have Daniel’s eyes when you’re angry.”
“Where’s the ledger?” he asked.
Ruth almost smiled. “Still impatient too.”
Detective Ortiz placed the recovered briefcase on the table.
Inside was not a ledger.
It was empty.
Ruth did not look surprised.
“The real one is safe.”
“Where?”
“I made Victor believe I was carrying it.”
Ruth explained that Daniel had come to her three days before his crash. He had found evidence that Samuel Morgan’s shares had never been legally transferred.
Daniel wanted to expose it.
Ruth begged him not to.
“I was afraid,” she said. “Samuel spent his last years fighting Arthur Hale. It destroyed him.”
Margaret absorbed the words in silence.
“Daniel left me copies,” Ruth continued. “After he died, Victor came to my house. He told me Jenna would lose every job she ever got in Boston if I made trouble.”
Jenna’s face hardened. “You believed him?”
“I had a daughter in college and no money for lawyers.”
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
Ruth looked toward Lily, sleeping in Jenna’s arms.
“When you became pregnant, I decided fear had already taken enough.”
She had spent months rebuilding Daniel’s file from old deeds, tax records, and trust documents.
Then she discovered Claire was intercepting Jenna’s letters to Ethan.
“I confronted her,” Ruth said.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Jenna demanded.
“Because Claire begged me for forty-eight hours. She said she had evidence on Victor and her father. I gave her one day.”
“The wedding day,” Ethan said.
Ruth nodded.
“And the ledger?”
Ruth reached into her hospital bag and handed Jenna a brass key.
“Samuel built a storage compartment into the first hotel he and Arthur owned together.”
Ethan knew the building.
The Hale Regent.
Ruth looked at Margaret.
“The compartment is behind the original lobby cornerstone.”
Margaret’s face changed.

“What?” Ethan asked.
She whispered, “That wall is scheduled for demolition tomorrow morning.”
