Chapter 7 - The Room That Had Been Wiped Clean

By midnight, Ethan was inside Room 1714.

The hotel suite smelled faintly of bleach.

Victor Lang had left nothing obvious behind. No suitcase. No papers. No fingerprints the hotel’s security officer could see without equipment.

But people who cleaned too carefully often forgot ordinary things.

Margaret found the first one.

A damp circle beneath the desk lamp.

“There was a glass here,” she said.

Noah checked the minibar inventory. “One bourbon missing.”

Ethan searched the wastebasket.

Empty.

Then Jenna, who had come only because Lily was asleep with a nurse at Margaret’s townhouse, crouched near the bed.

“What’s that?”

A corner of white paper stuck out from beneath the carpet trim.

Ethan pulled it free.

It was half a receipt.

GRAND ASTER BUSINESS CENTER

11:42 A.M.

12 COPIES

Under the total was a handwritten note: C.D. SIGN BEFORE CEREMONY.

Claire.

They went downstairs.

The business center manager remembered Victor immediately. “He printed legal documents. A lot of them.”

“Did you see what they were?” Ethan asked.

“No, sir. But he argued with a woman.”

“Claire?”

The manager shook his head. “Older. Gray hair.”

Everyone looked at Margaret.

“It wasn’t me,” she said.

The manager pulled up lobby footage from an auxiliary system Victor had apparently missed.

The woman entered frame.

Jenna gasped.

Ethan leaned closer.

It was Ruth Morgan.

Jenna’s mother.

“My mom?” Jenna whispered. “She told me she was in Vermont.”

The video had no audio, but Ruth was clearly furious. She shoved a folder against Victor’s chest, then pointed toward the elevator.

Victor said something.

Ruth slapped him.

Then she left.

Jenna called her mother.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

A third time.

Nothing.

Ethan asked hotel security to trace Ruth’s exit.

The parking camera showed her getting into a dark sedan at 12:03 P.M.

She was not driving.

Claire was.
