Chapter 4 - Dock Four

"That bag moved," Lena whispered.

Ivy looked sick. "I saw it."

They couldn't help whoever was inside without losing Nora. The choice sat between them like a loaded gun.

"Remember the cart number," Lena said. "We'll come back."

She pushed Maya's wheelchair into an empty linen room while Ivy went ahead. Through a narrow window, Lena saw the loading dock: a white mortuary van, cardboard boxes, a forklift, and the number 4 painted on a concrete post.

Nora was in the van.

Her hands were bound with plastic ties. She sat behind the driver's seat, knees pulled to her chest, staring straight at the dock door.

Maya rose from the wheelchair. Her legs gave way, and Lena caught her beneath the arms.

"That's her," Maya breathed. "That's my baby sister."

"Keep your voice down. We'll get close first."

Ivy returned with a stolen dock badge. "The side gate opens with this. Shaw's upstairs. We have maybe a minute."

Lena's pulse hammered. She crossed the dock with Ivy, both of them pushing the wheelchair as if transporting hospital equipment. At the van, Lena tapped the glass. Nora flinched, then saw Maya.

"Maya!"

"Quiet, sweetheart," Maya mouthed.

The rear handle was locked. Ivy tried the badge on the key box beside the driver's door. Nothing. Lena grabbed a metal wheel chock from the ground.

"Doctor," Ivy warned, "that's not a very subtle tool."

"Subtle got us nowhere."

She struck the rear window. A bright crack spread across it. Nora covered her face. Lena hit it again.

"Hey!" a man shouted.

A deputy in a tan sheriff's uniform came out of the dock office, pulling a set of keys from his pocket. He was young, red-faced, and holding a pistol down by his thigh.

"Back away from the van. Now."

Lena stood between him and Maya. "There's a child in there."

"She's a protected witness."

"Then tell me her name."

The deputy said nothing. He lifted the pistol.

Behind him, a security door swung open. Marcus Shaw stepped into the loading bay and saw the damaged window, the wheelchair, and Maya standing alive in the cold air.

"You weren't supposed to wake up," he said.
