Chapter 12 - The Colonel's Signature

Colonel Adrian Sloane had signed the order that declared Daniel dead. Reed found the document in a sealed personnel packet, along with a medical certification from a doctor who had been retired for two years at the time of the convoy explosion.

Mara read the paper again and again. It contained Daniel's name, service number, and a neat line saying his death had been verified. Beneath it was Sloane's signature.

“He looked my mother in the eye,” Mara said. “He let her grieve.”

Reed closed the folder. “We can prove a false record. The larger conspiracy is still complicated.”

Ellen sat across from them with a blanket over her shoulders. “Don't make it complicated to protect powerful people.”

No one answered. No one needed to.

The warehouse operation had rescued Ellen and produced arrests, but Daniel remained missing. Vale demanded a lawyer. Rourke denied knowing the contractors. Sloane issued a statement calling Mara a troubled soldier under investigation.

At noon, Mara found her photograph on a local news website. The caption called her a suspect in a violent training incident. A blurred video showed Liang falling, carefully cropped to remove the applause and Rourke's threats.

Ortega called from an unknown number. “They pulled us into the auditorium,” he said. “Sloane told everyone you attacked the master after he surrendered.”

“Would you testify?”

“Yeah. I recorded the whole thing on my phone. But I need you to know something.”

“What?”

“Rourke has the duty roster changed. The people who were in the hall that day have all been reassigned out of state. My flight leaves tonight.”

Mara looked at Naomi. Silencing witnesses without saying the word silence.

“Send me the video,” she said. “Then get somewhere public.”

Ortega's answer came in a whisper. “There's somebody outside my room.”

A hard knock sounded over the call. Then the line went dead.
