Chapter 8 - A Mother's Message

The bluebird had been Daniel's high-school woodworking project. He'd carved a hollow space beneath one wing to hide cash from Mara when she was thirteen. She'd found it within a day. He'd called her a terrible little detective and bought her ice cream.

She hadn't thought about that bird in years.

“Someone has to get to the house,” Mara said. “Not me. They expect me.”

Naomi made a call to an old friend, retired Chief Warrant Officer Ruth Calder, who lived ten minutes from Mara's parents. Ruth answered with a suspicious “What did you break now?”

“Potentially a whole system,” Naomi replied. “Can you retrieve something without attracting attention?”

Ruth posed as a plumber responding to a burst pipe. She later sent a photograph of the bluebird, removed from the wall, and a folded envelope from its underside.

Inside were photocopies of invoices, Daniel's handwriting, and a handwritten phone number marked FOR WHEN THE CHAIN OF COMMAND FAILS.

Mara dialed it. A woman answered on the second ring.

“Inspector General's office. Evelyn Shaw.”

“I need to report a kidnapping and a falsified death.”

Shaw didn't laugh. She asked for Mara's name, rank, and safe callback number, then listened without interruption.

“Do not give evidence to your command,” Shaw said. “I'm opening an emergency referral to federal investigators. I need independent corroboration.”

“We have a video.”

“Keep the original. Back it up. And do not attempt a hostage rescue yourself.”

Mara looked at the midnight address. “I can't promise that.”

“Then promise me you'll give your mother a better chance than a solo charge through a guarded door.”

Hours later, Shaw arranged a secure call with Special Agent Caleb Reed of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service. Reed sounded tired, skeptical, and practical.

“I need more than a story,” he said.

Naomi sent him a hashed copy of the footage and the earlier arrest-order timestamp. He went silent for almost a full minute.

Then Reed said, “Sergeant Bennett, don't move. That video is linked to a sealed investigation my agency was told to close last year.”
