Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Door

The next morning, David attended a meeting at Mesa headquarters with Marissa and an independent aviation compliance specialist named Rachel Torres. He had asked for an evidence-preservation plan, not a press conference.
Mesa's interim CEO, Patricia Bell, met them herself. She looked tired enough to have spent the night arguing with lawyers.
“I owe Malik an apology,” Patricia said.
“Then give it to Malik,” David replied. “Not to a camera.”
She nodded.
Rachel explained that the airline needed separate reviews: one into the cabin incident, another into reservation and data access, and a third into governance conflicts. Mixing them would allow everyone involved to hide behind confusion.
Harold objected. “This is excessive for a seating dispute.”
“It's no longer just a seating dispute,” Patricia said.
Selena placed Catherine's handwritten note on the table. Harold turned pale.
“Is that your instruction?” Patricia asked.
“It's not my handwriting.”
“That wasn't the question.”
Harold claimed somebody was trying to pin the problem on him. Elliot Vance had been demanding an upgrade. The finance committee had been pushing the airline to maintain investor relationships. Under pressure, Harold admitted, he'd directed the gate to find another place for a passenger.
“Did you know the passenger was a child?” Rachel asked.
Harold looked at David. “I didn't know his name.”
“Would knowing his name have made the treatment acceptable?” David asked.
Silence.
Patricia ordered Harold placed on administrative leave while investigators reviewed access logs. She also notified the board that a potential conflict of interest required independent oversight.
As the meeting ended, Marissa received a secure message from Johnson Aerotech's cybersecurity team. They had identified the failed bid download as part of a broader attempt.
Someone had offered to sell Johnson Aerotech's confidential technical drawings to a competitor.
