Chapter 4 - The Executive Override

Harold reached for the printout. Nora stepped back.
“That's an administrative ID,” he said. “Shared across departments.”
“Since when?” Selena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Since before you joined us.”
Nora folded the page. “I'll preserve the logs. Our security team can confirm who accessed it.”
“No need to turn this into a circus,” Harold said.
David watched the way Elliot avoided Harold's eyes. He'd seen that movement in boardrooms: two people pretending they had never made a deal.
Captain Ortega made a practical call. Elliot would not board until the seating issue was cleared. Malik could travel in 2A if he wished, with a different flight attendant assigned to his section. Catherine would be removed from duty pending review, not publicly condemned before facts were established.
Catherine's expression crumpled. “I followed instructions.”
“Whose?” Selena asked.
Catherine looked toward Harold. He shook his head once. So slightly that most people missed it.
Malik didn't.
“Dad,” he whispered after she left, “that man told her not to talk.”
David turned. Harold was already speaking into his phone.
Outside, beyond the windows, service vehicles moved along the sunlit apron. Everything looked ordinary. That bothered David. A child had been humiliated inside an ordinary morning, and the world had simply kept working.
“Can you fly without me?” he asked Malik.
Malik considered it. “I want to. But I don't want that lady to lose her job because of me.”
“She's responsible for what she chose to do. You aren't responsible for an adult's decision.”
“And what about the other guy?”
“We'll find out what happened.”
They embraced. David stayed until a replacement crew member introduced herself and showed Malik how to contact the captain. He watched from the gate as the aircraft door closed.
Then Nora approached with a second page from the audit trail.
“There's another issue. The override wasn't the only entry. Someone marked Malik as a security concern before he ever boarded.”
