Chapter 14 - The Sentence Lily Refused to Say

I didn't ask Lily about the allegation directly.
Dana Ruiz did.
A child interviewer trained for exactly this kind of situation met with her in a room full of soft chairs and art supplies.
Afterward, Dana called me into the hallway.
"Evelyn tried to get Lily to say you hit her."
I pressed my back against the wall.
"Did Lily ever say it?"
"Not to us."
"Did she say it to anyone else?"
"She says she refused."
Dana paused.
"That may be why the punishments escalated."
I felt like the air had disappeared.
The freezer wasn't random.
It wasn't just a cruel reaction to a missing key.
It was part of a pattern.
Evelyn wanted obedience.
Lily had stopped giving it.
That afternoon, Lily climbed onto the couch beside me and handed me a folded sheet of paper.
It was a drawing.
Three stick figures.
Me.
Lily.
A dog we didn't own yet.
Taylor wasn't in it.
"Can Mom be good again?" Lily asked.
The question hurt more than anything Evelyn had done.
I could have told her yes.
Children deserve hope.
But they also deserve truth.
"Mom has to make better choices," I said. "For a long time."
"Is she going to jail?"
"I don't know."
"Is Grandma?"
"Maybe."
Lily looked down.
"Grandma says jail is where bad people go."
"Sometimes people do bad things and have to face consequences."
"Am I bad because I took the key?"
I turned toward her.
"No."
"Grandma said everything happened because I stole it."
"Listen to me. Nothing she did was your fault. Nothing."
Lily started crying.
I pulled her against me.
After a minute, she whispered something into my shirt.
"There was one sentence I wouldn't say."
"What sentence?"
She wiped her nose.
"Grandma wanted me to tell the judge, 'Daddy scares me when we're alone.'"
My hands shook.
"What did you tell her?"
Lily looked at me.
"I told her, 'No. Daddy makes me feel safe.'"
I hugged her so tightly she laughed through her tears.
That evening, Keller called.
"We found something on Evelyn's laptop."
"What?"
"A draft petition to terminate your parental rights."
"On what basis?"
"The allegation Lily refused to make."
May you like
He paused.
"It was written before your divorce was even filed."
