Chapter 17 - Who Closed the Lid

I thought I had already reached the worst part of the story.

I was wrong.

Lily remembered Evelyn ordering her into the freezer.

But she said Evelyn walked away before the lid came down.

Taylor arrived home.

Taylor argued with Evelyn.

Then Taylor stood over the freezer.

"Mom told her I would get out," Lily said.

"What did your mom do?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"She said, 'Five minutes.'"

"And then?"

"She closed it."

I called Dana immediately.

Lily was interviewed again the next morning.

The audio recording supported her memory.

There was a metallic thud at 9:19 PM.

Then Evelyn said, "Good. She needs to learn."

Taylor replied, "Five minutes. That's all."

But five minutes became ten.

Then twenty.

Then forty.

Until I arrived.

Taylor had not merely failed to rescue Lily.

She had closed the lid.

At the emergency hearing, my attorney presented the timeline.

The judge listened without interrupting.

Taylor sat at the other table with her new lawyer.

She didn't deny it.

When asked why, she started to answer, stopped, and finally said, "I was afraid of my mother."

The judge looked at her for a long time.

"And your daughter was afraid of both of you."

Taylor lowered her head.

The court granted me sole temporary legal and physical custody.

Taylor's contact remained supervised.

Evelyn's petition for grandparent visitation was denied.

Then the judge did something I didn't expect.

She ordered Taylor into a parenting and trauma evaluation and said future contact would depend on real progress, not promises.

Outside court, Taylor approached me.

"I understand if you hate me."

"This isn't about hate."

"What is it about?"

"Lily being safe."

Taylor nodded.

"I want that too."

I looked at her.

"Then prove it when nobody is watching."

She cried quietly.

I walked away.

That afternoon, prosecutors charged Taylor with child endangerment.

She turned herself in.

Two hours later, Evelyn's lawyer requested an emergency meeting.

He claimed Evelyn had information that could "change the entire case."

She wanted to trade it for a reduced sentence.

The information was about Taylor.

And according to Evelyn, it started years before Lily was born.
