Chapter 7 - Elena's Secret

I called Elena before the car left Red Hook.
She answered on the first ring.
"Are the babies safe?"
"Sleeping. Sophie too. What's wrong?"
"Where did Tomas die?"
Silence.
That was the answer before she spoke.
"Adrien -"
"Where?"
"Red Hook."
I closed my eyes.
Marco sat across from me in the SUV, watching my face.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because your father paid me to keep quiet."
The words hit harder than I expected.
"About what?"
"Tomas wasn't doing construction. He was installing a hidden electrical system in the old warehouse. He told me it didn't make sense. Too much power for storage rooms. Too many locked doors. Then there was a fire."
"My father said it was an accident."
"Your father said many things."
Her voice shook now.
"Two days after Tomas died, Carlo Moretti came to my apartment. He paid the funeral. Paid our rent for a year. Then he offered me work at the house. He said keeping Sophie and me close was the safest thing for us."
"Safest from who?"
"He never said."
I looked at the city sliding past the window.
Five years of loyalty from Elena suddenly had another shape.
"Why stay?"
"Because I had a child and no money. Then because your wife was kind to me. Then because those babies were born and I loved them. Pick whichever reason makes you least angry."
I was angry.
But not at her.
"Did Bianca know about Tomas?"
"Yes."
My eyes opened.
"She asked me about the warehouse two weeks before the triplets were born. I told her everything."
"Why?"
"Because she found Tomas's name on an invoice signed by your father."
The SUV stopped at a red light.
Then Elena whispered, "Adrien, someone is outside the nursery hall."
Every muscle in my body locked.
"Where are the guards?"
"I don't know."
Marco was already on his radio.
No response from the east wing.
"Elena, take the children into my office. Lock the steel door."
"Sophie is asleep downstairs."
"Leave her with Rosa. Get the babies. Now."
I heard Elena running.
A door opened on her end.
Then she gasped.
"What?"
"The hallway camera is off."
Marco told the driver to run the red light.
I heard one of the babies begin crying.
Then Elena screamed.
The phone hit the floor.
I heard footsteps.
A man's voice said, "Where is the girl?"
Not the babies.
The girl.
Sophie.
My blood went cold.

The person inside my house was not looking for my children.
He was looking for the four-year-old who had heard him inside the wall.
