Chapter 17 - The Place She Hid

Harlan's office was empty. Her official car remained in its garage, and her passport was still in her desk. Investigators checked known properties, relatives, transit records, and phone activity without presuming where she had gone.
Vale, arrested on the morning of the farmhouse search, denied involvement until confronted with the clinic footage and his own messages. He then asked to speak with a lawyer about cooperation. That was as much as Alvarez would tell Nora.
Eli had begun sleeping with his bedroom door open. Nora sat on the edge of his bed while he counted the small brass stars on his night-light.

Simon did not stand or offer an embrace. "My mom told me I was adopted," he said. "She never knew the paperwork was forged. She loved me."
"I don't want to take that away," Ben said.
"Good. Because I'm not trading one family for another."
"I wasn't going to ask."
They spoke about ordinary things first: jobs, music, terrible coffee. Only then did Simon ask about Evelyn. Ben showed him a photograph without pressing him to visit.
As they parted, Simon said, "Maybe next month we could get lunch."
Ben nodded, throat tight.

Outside, Alvarez called with a new lead: Harlan had checked into a private recovery center under an alias.
The center stood on the same block as Nora's house.
