Chapter 6 - The Woman in the Van
The white minivan sat under a maple behind the closed Riverside clinic. No movement showed through the dark windows. Ben parked a block away, waited for the arriving units, and moved only after the building's exits were covered.
The van was empty. Its engine was warm. On the passenger seat lay Eli's striped sweater, folded with care, and a note written on a pharmacy receipt: No uniforms inside. Come alone if you want him breathing.
Ben did not go alone. He photographed the message, called his supervisor, and had officers secure the property while a trained negotiator approached. A threat against a child did not make a reckless entry wise.
A woman's voice rose from the clinic's rear doorway.
"Is Nora safe?"
The speaker was thin, with dark hair braided tight and a scar along her chin. She held no visible weapon. Ben kept distance.
"Identify yourself."
"Leah Parker. I need you to tell Nora that Dad lied."
"Where is Eli?"
"In the records room. He has water. He isn't hurt. I took him because Vale had another car waiting down the block. They wanted to use him against Nora."
"Then let us bring him out."
Leah shook her head. "Someone in your department told Vale you were coming. I don't know who."
"You can tell us everything once the child is outside."
Leah looked past him toward a second-story window. "You don't understand what the files are."
"Help me understand."
"The transfer program was real. At first. Families volunteered for services. Then people started changing addresses, using dead relatives' signatures, shifting public money through fake placements. I was one of their first mistakes."
Inside the doorway, Eli's voice sounded small and furious.
"I can hear you! I want my mom!"
Leah's face crumpled. She stepped aside.
Ben entered only when the team cleared the threshold. Eli ran to him and buried his face in the green vest.

On the wall behind the boy, hundreds of children's file labels covered the shelves.
One label carried Ben Mercer's own last name.
