Chapter 2 - A Man With a Key

Ben moved between the boy and the opening.
"Police," he called. "Please come to the door and keep your hands where I can see them."
The man who emerged wore gray dress pants and a blue cardigan. He looked forty, clean-shaven, with the polished patience of someone practiced at meetings.
"Thank God," he said. "I'm Adrian Vale. Nora Parker is my colleague. The boy has had a difficult year."
"Where is Mrs. Parker?"
"Resting. A migraine. I came to help."
"I'd like to speak with her."
"I really wouldn't."
Ben let the silence hang. Vale's attention slipped to the narrow gap between door and jamb, then to Eli, then to Ben's radio.
"Your partner coming?" Vale asked.
"Another officer is on the way."
"Unnecessary. I'll phone Nora and clear this up."
"You can do that while we wait."
Vale pulled out a phone and tapped with rigid precision. Upstairs, an electronic chime sounded once, then stopped.
"She's asleep," Vale said.
"Is she answering?"
"You heard the phone."
"I asked whether she's answering."
Eli moved behind Ben. "Mom never has a migraine," he whispered. "She gets headaches from the newspaper ink. But she calls them headaches."
Vale's smile faded. "Eli, this isn't helpful."
Ben noticed the fresh scratch beside the brass lock, the thin line of a second keyhole that had been painted over, and a small strip of blue fabric pinned beneath the doorframe. He photographed nothing yet. He would remember everything.
"Mr. Vale," he said, "would you mind stepping outside?"
"This is private property."
"A child has reported someone inside the home may need help. I'm making sure everyone is safe."
Vale turned slightly, blocking the hall.
A car rolled past the house, slowed, and continued. Vale watched it with more interest than he had shown in the boy.
Then Eli spoke, barely audible.
"He made me practice telling people Mom went to Ohio."
Vale's hand shot toward the child's backpack.

Ben caught his wrist before he touched Eli.
At the exact same moment, the back door of the house slammed.
