Chapter 9 - The Sample Nobody Saw

Alvarez examined the image and asked an analyst to preserve the original message and identify any metadata. Ben could not tell whether the picture proved wrongdoing or had been arranged to look that way.

Nora, still under hospital observation, stared at it a long time.

"I did break that seal," she said.

Ben felt his stomach tighten. "Why?"

"Because the chain-of-custody log said the sample came from Ash Creek's north well. It came from the south one. I opened it in front of a technician to verify the barcode. Then I filed a discrepancy report."

"Do you have the report?"

"My employer said it was destroyed in a server migration. I kept the confirmation email."

She retrieved it from a cloud account while Alvarez watched. The email showed the correction had been submitted months before the scandal. The cropped photograph did not include the technician standing just beyond the frame.

"Someone is trying to make me look guilty," Nora said.

"Yes," Alvarez replied. "And that means they care what you can testify to."

Eli, coloring at a nearby table, looked up.

"Mom, does the water make kids disappear?"

Nora pulled her chair closer. "No, sweetheart. The water can make people sick. The missing kids are a different wrong. Some of the same adults may be hiding both things."

"Will those grown-ups go to jail?"

"We have to find out what they did first."

He considered that answer and went back to his crayon. Ben realized that truth sounded less comforting than a promise, but it was kinder.

An emergency hearing later that afternoon authorized temporary protection for Nora and Eli. Alvarez also obtained a warrant for the clinic records and a preservation order for county systems.

At dusk, an evidence clerk called from the lab. The clinic folders were soaked by a pipe that had burst inside the sealed evidence van.

"The paper's damaged," she reported. "But the van's camera caught a person beside the rear door."

Alvarez opened the footage.

It showed a uniformed police sergeant turning the camera away.
