Chapter 10 - The House Beneath the House

The map led to a sealed room beneath the Blake estate.

Alexander had lived in the mansion for seventeen years and never known it existed. The entrance was behind a wine rack in the old library. A hidden latch opened a narrow stairwell descending into the foundation.

Lena went first with a flashlight. The walls were lined with shelves. At the center stood a metal cabinet with three locks.

The musical score gave them the first combination. Richard’s key opened the second. Margaret knew the third: the date of Lena’s first dance competition.

Inside were ledgers, photographs, passports, and a list of names. Some belonged to judges. Others belonged to police officers, shipping managers, and club owners.

Alexander turned page after page. “This is the whole network.”

“No,” Margaret said. “It’s the part Frank wanted people to find.”

A voice came from the stairwell.

“Very good.”

A man stepped into the light. He was in his sixties, elegant in a dark suit, with a silver ring on his right hand.

Marcus raised his weapon.

Alexander stared. “Uncle Peter?”

Peter Blake smiled. “You always were your mother’s son.”

Peter had been presumed dead after a boating accident twelve years earlier. He had not died. He had taken over the hidden accounts and built a second network outside the family’s public businesses.

“You arranged the fire,” Alexander said.

“Your grandfather did. I made sure it stayed useful.”

“You kept Margaret alive.”

“I kept her available.”

Lena moved closer to her mother. Peter’s gaze followed her.

“Look at you. Margaret’s daughter. The little dancer.”

“Don’t speak to her,” Alexander said.

Peter laughed. “You think this is about family? It’s about control. The ledger can ruin judges, police commanders, and half the people who keep this city running.”

“Then we release it,” Lena said.

Peter’s smile vanished. “You have no idea what happens when the whole city loses its balance.”

He raised his hand. Two men emerged behind him.

Marcus fired first. The room exploded into motion.

Peter grabbed Lena and pressed a small pistol against her ribs.

“Drop your weapons,” he said. “Or the dancer dies.”
