Chapter 17 - The Last Performance

Marcus survived the night, but the bullet had damaged his lung. Before the ambulance took him, he pressed a small flash drive into Alexander’s hand.

“Everything Peter asked me to do,” he whispered. “It’s all there.”

Alexander closed his fist around it. “You’re going to tell them yourself.”

Marcus gave a weak smile. “I’d like that.”

The drive contained more than orders. It held recordings of Peter discussing the hidden network, payments to officials, and plans to destroy the remaining evidence. One recording named the person who had helped Peter escape the theater.

Victoria.

She had not been tied up by Peter’s men. She had arranged the kidnapping herself to get close enough to steal the ledger.

Lena confronted her in the hospital corridor.

“Was any of it real?”

Victoria looked away. “I wanted to make sure Peter couldn’t get the original.”

“You could have told us.”

“You wouldn’t have trusted me.”

“You’re right.”

Victoria’s eyes filled. “I was jealous of you. Not because Alexander wanted you. Because your mother loved you enough to risk everything. My father never did that for me.”

Lena didn’t forgive her. Not then.

The next morning, Alexander called a press conference. He would release the ledger and the recordings to federal investigators, even if it meant the Blake businesses collapsed.

His attorneys warned him that he could lose everything.

“Then let it fall,” he said.

Lena watched him sign the documents.

“You’re giving up your empire.”

“I’m giving up what was never mine to keep.”

The press conference was scheduled for noon.

At eleven fifty-eight, the lights in the ballroom went out.

A voice came over the sound system.

“Ladies and gentlemen, before Mr. Blake destroys his family, perhaps he should hear what his maid has been hiding.”

A screen lit up behind the stage.

It showed Lena entering the hidden room beneath the estate.

Then it showed her taking a document from the cabinet.

The footage had been edited to make it look as if she had stolen the ledger for herself.
