Chapter 19 - The Signature

Alexander didn’t move.
Lena looked at him. “Did you?”
He took a slow breath. “I signed a transport order. My father told me it was for employees being moved after the fire. I didn’t know Margaret was on the list.”
“Did you see her name?”
“No.”
“Did you ask?”
“No.”
The answer hurt because it was honest.
The federal agent explained that the order had been used to move Margaret from the hotel to the clinic. Alexander’s signature was not proof that he had planned the abduction, but it was evidence that he had helped it happen.
He agreed to answer every question.
He also agreed to step away from the companies while the investigation continued.
Lena watched him walk out with the agents. He did not ask her to wait. He did not ask her to forgive him.
For the first time, he did not try to control the ending.
The investigation lasted months. Peter was charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, bribery, and murder. Several officials resigned before charges were filed. The Blake shipping business was placed under federal oversight. The old foundation was dissolved.
Marcus testified. Richard testified. Victoria handed over her father’s records and accepted a plea deal for her role in hiding evidence. She was sentenced to probation and community service after cooperating with prosecutors.
Margaret moved into a small apartment near Lena. They spent mornings cooking and afternoons walking by the lake. Some days they talked about the missing years. Other days they sat quietly, learning how to be mother and daughter again.
Alexander’s case took longer.
When Lena visited him in the federal detention center, he stood on the other side of the glass.
“You don’t have to come,” he said.
“I know.”
“I won’t ask you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
He nodded.
Lena placed her hand against the glass. “I came because I wanted you to know that the truth matters. Even when it hurts.”
He placed his hand opposite hers.
“I’m going to tell them everything.”
“Then start there.”

When she left, he did not call her name.
But he watched until the door closed.
