Chapter 14 - A Shot Across the Water

The bullet struck the window beside Evelyn. Glass burst inward.
Alexander pulled her behind the wall. Marcus shouted for everyone to get down. Lena crawled toward the kitchen, where she could see the lake through a narrow side window.
A boat was moving away from the dock.
“Two people,” she called. “One at the wheel, one with a rifle.”
Marcus radioed the perimeter team. Alexander stayed with Evelyn, his hands shaking as he checked her for blood.
“I thought you were dead,” he said.
“I know.”
“I buried you.”
“I know, sweetheart.”
He bowed his head against her shoulder. For a moment, the feared billionaire looked like a child who had spent years waiting at a window.
Margaret joined them. Evelyn took her hands.
“You saved my son,” Evelyn whispered.
“I couldn’t save him from his father.”
“You tried.”
Lena watched them. Two women who had been blamed for a crime they had tried to stop. Two mothers who had paid for powerful men’s secrets with their lives, their names, and their children.
A second shot hit the wall.
Marcus returned fire through the broken window. The boat turned sharply and disappeared behind the trees.
“Someone knew we’d come,” he said.
Alexander looked at the room. “There’s a leak in my security.”
Evelyn nodded. “There has always been one.”
She opened her medical file and removed a folded document. “This is the original trust. Thomas Carter left his shares to his child. The Blake family hid it because it gave the child control over the foundation and the property that funded the criminal accounts.”
Lena took the document. Her name was there, written in ink.
“I don’t want your money.”
“It isn’t about money,” Evelyn said. “It’s about the evidence attached to it. The trust contains the location of the last ledger.”
Alexander looked at the paper. “Where?”
May you like
Evelyn pointed to a line near the bottom.
“Under the dance studio where Margaret taught Lena.”
