Chapter 13 - My Name on the List

I read the list three times.

Six names.

Five were executives, lawyers, or officials connected to Vale Development.

The sixth was Ethan Hale.

Me.

Claire stared at me. “Anna wouldn’t accuse you.”

“Looks like she did.”

Rachel held up the page. “A list isn’t an accusation without context.”

But I already knew what the context might be.

My company had sold land to Vale Development two years before Anna died.

I had approved the deal.

I had made twelve million dollars.

At the time, Daniel told me the structure reduced tax exposure.

I never asked where the money moved afterward.

Rachel opened the first ledger.

There it was.

Hale Construction proceeds flowed into three trusts, then into shell companies, then back to Vale-controlled projects.

My signature appeared on several authorization pages.

“I signed those,” I said.

Claire’s face went white.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Rachel didn’t comfort me.

Good detectives don’t.

“Then we prove that.”

One box contained Anna’s private notes.

She had written dates beside my signature pages.

E believed this was routine refinancing.

D prepared documents.

M insists E must never know.

My knees weakened.

Anna hadn’t been investigating me.

She had been protecting me.

Then we found the final notebook.

The last entry was written the morning she died.

Claire says she can get me inside Marcus’s server room tonight. Daniel is panicking. I think he told Marcus.

Below that, underlined twice:

If I don’t come home, the crash was arranged.

Rachel closed the notebook.

“We have enough for warrants.”

Her phone rang.

She listened, then looked at me.

“What?”

“Daniel escaped custody during transport to the hospital.”

Claire whispered, “He’s running to Marcus.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I remembered Daniel’s letter. His bruises. His warning.

“He’s running from Marcus.”

Rachel’s phone buzzed again.

A text from an unknown number.

A location pin.

May you like

Then three words.

I CAN PROVE IT.
