Chapter 17 - Temporary Freedom

Claire’s escape sent the whole case into overdrive.

While officers flooded the hotel address, Ortiz arranged emergency protective custody paperwork, statements from Dr. Keller and Dr. Singh, and a forensic download of Claire’s phone backups from the devices recovered at the cabin.

I stayed with Emma through all of it.

At some point after midnight, while she slept against my side on the couch, Ortiz stepped quietly into the family room.

“We found Claire,” she said.

I looked up.

“She checked into the hotel under her sister’s name. We picked her up in the parking garage.”

“Is she finally done?”

Ortiz’s expression didn’t soften. “For tonight.”

The next morning, the legal war started.

Claire got a lawyer fast. A very expensive one.

He requested bail, implied mutual conflict, and hinted that I was an unstable widower reacting out of grief. The second I heard that, I wanted to put my fist through the wall.

Ortiz stopped me with one look. “Save it for the hearing.”

So I did.

Within forty-eight hours we were in family court for an emergency protective order and in criminal court for arraignment. My mother sat in the back row looking hollow. Rosa held Emma’s hand outside until the judge decided whether she would need to testify.

Claire entered in a navy dress with her hair blown out and her face composed. She looked like a brochure for innocence.

Then her eyes met mine.

There it was again.

That small, private smile.

The one that said she still thought she could win.

Her attorney stood and said words like misunderstanding, emotional household, disciplinary lapse, no lasting harm.

No lasting harm.

I nearly stood up right then.

Instead I gripped the bench and waited until the prosecutor played the playhouse footage.

The courtroom went silent.

Claire didn’t look at the screen.

She looked at me.

And when Emma’s small body appeared being shoved through the playhouse door, Claire finally lost that little smile.

Then her lawyer did something I had dreaded.

He asked the judge for permission to question Emma anyway.
