Chapter 7 - The Pantry

By the time my mother and Claire left, Emma looked wrung out.

I canceled work, made grilled cheese we barely touched, and called a child therapist Dr. Keller recommended. We got an appointment for the next morning.

That night, while I helped Emma get ready for bed, I noticed something dark near the top of her arm.

“Hold still,” I said softly.

I rolled up the sleeve of her pajama top.

There it was.

A fading bruise shaped unmistakably like fingers.

I had to sit down.

Emma saw my face and immediately looked scared. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For making everybody mad.”

I knelt in front of her so we were eye level. “You did not make anybody mad. Claire chose to hurt you. Those are different things.”

She nodded like she understood, but kids always understand less and feel more.

“Tell me about the pantry,” I said.

Emma twisted the ear of her rabbit. “It was when you were in Chicago.”

I had been gone one night for a conference.

“She said I was whining. She turned the light off and closed the door. I banged and cried and then she opened it and said if I told you, you’d think I was a liar.”

“How long?”

She shrugged. “A lot.”

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them, Rosa was standing in the doorway with tears in hers.

“I need to say something,” she said.

I stood. “Say it.”

She took a shaky breath. “I saw Ms. Claire take Emma by the wrist more than once. She always smiled when you came into the room. I told myself maybe I was overreacting.”

“You weren’t.”

Rosa pressed her hand to her mouth. “I am so sorry.”

I wasn’t angry at her. I was angry at myself.

I was the one who brought Claire into our house.

After Emma fell asleep, I called Detective Ortiz and told her about the pantry, the bruise, and Rosa.

Then I did one more thing.

I ordered three indoor cameras with same-day delivery, changed every smart lock code in the house, removed Claire from the school pickup list, and activated silent alerts on the security system.

I was done giving people the benefit of the doubt.

At 11:42 PM, my phone lit up with a text from Claire.

Why did the alarm code stop working?
