Chapter 15 - Dawn at North Ridge

Victor asked for a pen before the doctors finished checking him. "I need to write down everyone who helped keep me there," he said.

"Rest first," Julian replied.

"I rested while you suffered."

"Then start by telling me the names you know. Don't guess at the rest."

Victor looked at him with surprise. His son no longer needed a powerful father who had every answer. He needed a witness capable of telling the difference between memory and fear.

The federal agents raided North Ridge before sunrise.

Julian wasn't allowed near the operation. He waited at the hospital where he had begun physical therapy, staring at the clock while Maya sat beside him.

"I keep thinking if I hadn't stood up—" he said.

"You would still have been in danger," Maya replied. "Standing just made the danger visible."

Brooks called at 5:42 a.m.

They had found Victor alive in a locked treatment wing. He was weak, dehydrated, and frightened. Two guards were arrested. Price was missing.

Julian bent forward and covered his face.

Maya gave him the silence he needed.

That afternoon father and son met through a hospital doorway. Victor looked smaller without his tailored coat, but his eyes were still unmistakably Julian's.

"I'm sorry," Victor said.

Julian gripped his chair's wheels. "You let them bury a stranger in your name."

"I thought they'd kill you if I showed myself."

"They almost killed me anyway."

Victor nodded. "You're right."

That answer startled Julian more than another excuse would have.

"I need the truth," he said. "Even the part that makes you look bad."

Victor confessed that he had concealed an early audit warning because he feared a public scandal would destroy the business. He had given Graham time to repair the losses. Graham used the delay to move more money.

"My silence helped him," Victor said. "I will testify to that."

A nurse interrupted with an envelope delivered by hospital messenger.

Inside was a photograph of Julian standing at the gala.

On the back someone had written: YOUR FATHER ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO SURVIVED THE CRASH.
