Chapter 9 - The Price of a Name

Arjun noticed that the footage began exactly thirty seconds before Vivian appeared and stopped as soon as she left. "Someone picked these moments," he said. "We need the complete original recording and its source."

"You're saying it could be staged?" Julian asked.

"I'm saying the truth can be cropped too."

For the first time since the gala, Julian let himself feel uncertainty without treating it as weakness.

Vivian stood beside Julian's car in the grainy footage, holding a small case. A timestamp glowed in the corner.

"That's enough," Julian said, his voice hollow. "She did it."

"It's enough to ask investigators to examine it," Arjun said. "We don't know what she did with that case."

They enlarged no pixels, invented no details. The clip showed Vivian reaching beneath the dashboard through an open driver's door, then leaving. It showed no collision and no mechanic's tool.

Maya studied the second folder. The pension trust's transfers were far more specific: hundreds of millions of dollars moved through shell companies into a firm called E. Whitmore Holdings.

"Your mother's name," she said.

Julian shook his head. "Her estate was settled years ago."

Arjun printed the incorporation record. The company had been created after Eleanor's death using her old tax identification information and a copied signature.

"Identity fraud," he said. "Or someone wanted you to think it was."

A knock came at the office door.

Vivian entered alone. She had changed into jeans and a plain coat, but her copper hair and polished posture made her impossible to mistake.

"I know you saw the video," she said.

Julian rose halfway from his chair before the pain stopped him. "You were in my car."

"Yes."

"Did you cut the brakes?"

"No." Her eyes shone. "I installed a recorder. Graham threatened me. I thought if I could catch him admitting what he'd done—"

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because two days later you crashed, and Graham showed me pictures of your hospital room. He said your next accident would happen there."

Maya watched her closely. "And yet you signed medication orders."

Vivian's face broke. "I signed what Price handed me. Then he told me I could never undo it."

She opened her bag, revealing a second phone.

"I kept proof," she whispered. "But Graham knows I've been talking."

The phone buzzed with a live photograph of Victor, bound to a chair.
