Chapter 17 - What Nora Heard

Brooks laid a recorder on the table and explained who would have access to the interview. Nora asked for a lawyer before continuing. Nobody complained. It mattered to her that, after so much confinement, she could say no to a question and have the room respect it.
Julian watched the exchange and wondered how many choices his own family had called inconvenient simply because those choices belonged to someone with less power.
Julian stared at Victor, who had come into the room with a nurse.
"Tell me she's wrong."
Victor's shoulders sank. "I'm not sure what she heard."
Nora leaned forward. "You said, 'You promised nobody would get hurt.' And Graham said, 'Then you should have signed.'"
Victor pressed a shaking hand against his forehead.
He admitted he had agreed to meet Graham at the roadside after the collision. He believed a private security team would move Julian to a hospital and help hide the audit files from the criminal group behind the fraud. Instead, Graham ordered Nora taken away.
"I thought she was dead," Victor whispered.
"You made a deal with the man who nearly killed us," Julian said.
"I made the worst decision of my life."
Nora described months of confinement, an escape during a transfer, and the strangers who had hidden her until she could safely contact investigators. She had waited because she did not know whom to trust.
Brooks listened without interruption, then told Victor that his account required formal questioning and might expose him to charges. He agreed.
Julian watched his father sign the statement.
"I used to think you were the one person who always knew what to do," he said.
"I didn't," Victor replied. "I was just the one with enough money to hide my mistakes."
Maya followed Julian into the hall.
"You can love him and still hold him responsible," she said.
"I don't know what I feel."
"Then don't decide today."
A breaking-news alert appeared on her phone.
