Chapter 3 - A Name Beneath the Blood

When the dispatcher asked whether anyone was armed, Maya refused to guess. She described only what she'd seen. It wasn't heroism. It was discipline she'd learned after her old complaint was dismissed as emotional and unreliable. This time, every detail would be recorded before anyone could rewrite it.

Julian watched her speak and realized how practiced she sounded. Someone had taught this woman what it cost to be ignored.

Maya jammed her tray between the doors. The elevator shuddered open.

A man lay against the rear wall, one hand pressed to his ribs. A pale scar crossed his palm. His maintenance jacket read ELI TORRES.

Julian knelt beside him, pain burning through his legs. "What did you say about my father?"

Eli grabbed Julian's lapel. "He made it out. They moved him."

"Where?"

"The old clinic. North ridge. Look for the greenhouse."

Cole appeared in the kitchen doorway, followed by two security men. Eli recoiled.

"No police," Eli whispered. "Not the ones Graham pays."

Maya pulled out her phone and photographed Eli's face, the blood, the key card, everything. Cole saw her.

"Put that away."

"Call an ambulance," she said.

"We are handling it."

"Great. Then you won't mind if the emergency dispatcher records what I tell her."

She dialed before he could answer. The dispatcher asked for the address, and Maya spoke loudly enough for every cook to hear.

Cole backed away.

Julian brushed Eli's shoulder. "My father was buried. I saw the coffin."

"Closed coffin," Eli said. "Because they needed you to stop asking."

His eyes rolled back.

The ambulance arrived seven minutes later. Vivian arrived in five.

"Julian," she said, smoothing her gown, "this man is a disturbed former employee."

"You know him?"

"I've seen his picture. He made threats."

"You didn't ask what he said."

Vivian said nothing.

A paramedic lifted Eli onto a stretcher. As they wheeled him through the doorway, Eli opened his eyes and caught Maya's hand.

"The medicine," he rasped. "It's not treatment. It's the lock."

A tiny brass key fell from his fist into her palm.

Stamped along the metal were three letters.
