Chapter 11 - The Photograph From the ICU

Maya called the detective before she called anyone else.

The image was too close.

Too private.

It had been taken from inside Lily’s room.

Within an hour, hospital security had pulled every badge record for the final night.

One name appeared after visiting hours.

Diane Hale.

But the angle of the photograph did not match where Diane had stood.

The detective enlarged the image.

In the reflection of a dark monitor, a second figure could be seen.

A woman holding a phone.

“Rachel?” Evan asked.

Maya shook her head.

The hair was blonde.

Ava had blonde hair.

So did half the city.

Ava arrived at the station voluntarily.

She looked exhausted.

“That isn’t me.”

Evan said nothing.

She put her phone on the table.

“Take it. Search everything.”

The detective did.

The photograph was not there.

But another file was.

A screenshot of a bank transfer from Diane.

Twenty thousand dollars.

To Ava.

Maya stared.

Ava’s mouth fell open.

“I’ve never seen that.”

The transfer memo read:

CONFIDENTIALITY.

Evan looked at her.

“What did my mother pay you for?”

“She didn’t.”

The detective examined the transaction details.

“The receiving account is in your name.”

Ava shook her head violently.

“I swear to you, I didn’t get that money.”

Maya’s exhaustion sharpened into suspicion.

“Then who opened the account?”

Ava went silent.

“What?” Maya asked.

Ava whispered, “My mother.”

Evan frowned.

Ava looked at Maya.

“My mother works for Diane.”

The room went still.

“She has for eleven years.”

“What does she do?” Evan asked.

Ava’s voice dropped.

“Private household administration. Travel. Payments. Things your mother doesn’t want on company systems.”

Maya understood first.

“Your mother sent the hotel photos.”

Ava nodded slowly.

“She hates Diane.”

“Why?”

Ava looked at Evan.

“Because your father promised to leave Diane for her twenty-eight years ago.”

Evan’s face changed.

Ava continued.

“And then she got pregnant.”

Maya stared.

Ava’s eyes filled.

“My whole life, my mother told me my father was a married man who chose his family over us.”

Evan whispered, “No.”

Ava looked at him.

“Yes.”

Then she said the name.

“Richard Hale.”

Evan’s father.

May you like

Which meant Ava was not just Evan’s mistress.

She might be his half-sister.
