Chapter 17 - The Fall of Hale Systems

The investigation moved fast after Evan turned over records.
Diane had used company accounts for years to pay Elena Mercer.
Hotels.
Flights.
Confidentiality payments.
Private investigators.
Even the transfer that had funded Rachel’s anonymous messages had been disguised as a consulting expense.
The board removed Diane from every advisory position.
Federal auditors arrived two days later.
Evan lost control of the company his father had built.
He did not fight it.
Maya watched from a distance.
She had her own battle.
The memorial fund required paperwork, hospital partnerships, and a board.
Dr. Patel agreed to serve.
Noah volunteered.
Rachel asked.
Maya said no.
Her sister came to the house anyway.
“I know you hate me.”
Maya kept packing Lily’s books into a box.
“I don’t hate you.”
Rachel looked hopeful.
“I don’t trust you.”
That hurt more.
Rachel sat on the floor.
“I thought I could force the truth into the open.”
“You treated my marriage like a game.”
“I thought Evan was the danger.”
“He was.”
Rachel nodded.
“But I became one too.”
Maya finally looked at her.
“Why did you draw the X over his face?”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“I was angry after Diane told Lily where Evan was. I saw the card and I—”
“You changed my daughter’s drawing.”
“Yes.”
“You changed one of the last things she made.”
Rachel cried.
“I’m sorry.”
Maya closed the box.
“Sorry doesn’t restore what you touched.”
Rachel left without asking for forgiveness again.
That evening Evan came for the last of his belongings.
The house looked different with his clothes gone.
Bigger.
Colder.
At Lily’s bedroom door he stopped.
“Can I go in?”
Maya hesitated.
Then nodded.
He sat on the edge of Lily’s bed.
Her glow-in-the-dark stars were still on the ceiling.
A half-finished science project sat on the desk.
Evan saw a small glass jar labeled DAD’S PANCAKE MONEY.
Inside were seven dollars and thirty-two cents.
He laughed once, then cried.
Maya stood in the doorway.
“What was that for?”
“She wanted to take you to breakfast for your birthday.”
His shoulders shook.
Then he noticed an envelope taped beneath the desk.
Maya had never seen it.
He pulled it free.
On the front:
FOR MOM AND DAD. OPEN TOGETHER.
They stared at each other.
Neither moved.
Finally Maya sat beside him.
Evan opened the envelope.
Inside was a school assignment titled:
MY FAMILY IN TEN YEARS.
May you like
The first sentence read:
In ten years, Mom and Dad will still be mad sometimes, but they will always come back.
