Chapter 12 - The Lie Beneath the Affair

Evan vomited in the station bathroom.
When he came back, he looked ten years older.
Ava sat with both arms wrapped around herself.
“No,” he said. “My father died when I was sixteen. He would have told me.”
Ava gave a broken laugh.
“Men tell themselves a lot of things.”
Maya watched them both.
The affair that had already destroyed her marriage had become something grotesque.
But she refused to let the new shock erase the first betrayal.
“Did you know?” she asked Ava.
“No.”
“When did you suspect?”
“Tonight.”
“Why tonight?”
“Because my mother called after the article went up and said, ‘I warned you not to get close to him.’”
Evan looked sick.
A DNA test would take time.
Diane denied everything at first.
Then Noah arrived with an old family photograph.
Richard Hale at a company Christmas party.
Beside him stood a twenty-three-year-old administrative assistant.
Elena Mercer.
Ava’s mother.
On the back, in Richard’s handwriting:
E.M. — San Francisco, 1998.
Diane finally admitted she had known.
“She threatened our family for years,” Diane said over speakerphone. “I paid her to stay away.”
Ava stared at the phone.
“You paid my mother?”
“I protected my children.”
“You protected your name.”
Maya listened to them tear open decades of lies.
Then her own phone buzzed.
The unknown number again.
THIS FAMILY DESTROYS EVERY GIRL IT TOUCHES.
A second image appeared.
Lily in the ICU.
Awake.
Looking directly toward the camera.
Maya’s heart slammed.
“Detective.”
He took the phone.
The message continued.
ASK DIANE WHAT HAPPENED AT 4:47 A.M.
Dr. Patel had said Lily lost consciousness at 5:02.
Maya looked at Evan.
“What happened fifteen minutes before?”
Diane went silent on speakerphone.
“Mom?” Evan said.
No answer.
Then Diane whispered, “I went into Lily’s room.”
Maya stood so quickly her chair scraped back.
“You told me you never went in.”
“I lied.”
“What did you do?”
Diane began to cry.
“I told Lily her father loved her.”
Maya’s voice shook with rage.
“That’s not a crime.”
“No.”
“Then why are you scared?”
Diane’s next words turned the room cold.
“Because Lily asked me where her father was.”

A pause.
“And I told her the truth.”
