Chapter 10 - The Hospital Video

For several seconds, I could hear only Owen breathing.
“What video?” Susan Keene asked through the secure call.
I stared at the spreadsheet.
“I don’t know.”
But I had a terrible guess.
Hospital security cameras.
My collapse.
My blood loss.
Graham arriving later.
Anything could be edited into humiliation.
Daniel contacted the hospital’s legal department.
They confirmed that a clip had been accessed without authorization the morning after Owen’s birth.
Credentials belonged to a third-party facilities contractor.
The contractor’s account had been compromised.
The clip was seventy-eight seconds long.
It showed me being rushed through the corridor after my blood pressure crashed.
A nurse was compressing an IV bag by hand.
Blood stained the sheet beneath me.
No dignity.
No context.
Just a woman unconscious and nearly dying.
Then the video cut to Graham entering the maternity floor the next day.
He did not go to my room first.
He met Daniel near the elevators.
They exchanged the divorce folder.
That was the leverage.
If released strategically, it could destroy Graham socially and deepen the Ashford scandal.
It could also turn the worst medical moment of my life into entertainment.
Daniel looked sick.
“Claire, we can obtain an injunction.”
“Against whom?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Then the video can still appear anywhere.”
I sat at the kitchen table and felt the old fear return.
Not fear of being seen weak.
Fear of losing control over my own body again.
Graham called.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
“Did you know about a hospital video?”
“No.”
“If you’re lying—”
“I am not.”
His voice sounded different.
“What video?”
I told him.
Silence.
Then the cufflink click came through the phone.
He still had them.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“At the Ashford apartment.”
“Why are you wearing those cufflinks at night?”
Another pause.
“I’m holding them.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
I believed him.
That annoyed me.
He said, “Claire, if someone releases that footage, I’ll make a statement first.”
“You are not using my medical trauma for your redemption tour.”
“That isn’t what I mean.”
“Then say what you mean.”
“I will tell them exactly what I did.”
The room went quiet.
“No excuses,” he added. “No Vanessa. No board. No Northline. I will say I knew Owen was mine, I knew you were in the hospital, and I chose not to come.”
I looked at my son.
“Why?”
“Because if they want a scandal, give them the part that belongs to me.”
I swallowed.
“That won’t keep the video private.”
“No.”
“Then it doesn’t solve the problem.”
“No.”
At least he had finally learned not to call guilt a solution.
The next morning, the video was not released.
Instead, someone sent it directly to Elias.
Attached was a demand.
Restore Graham’s executive authority.
End the Northline investigation.
Allow the annual succession vote to proceed.
Or the footage would be distributed to every major financial news outlet.
Elias forwarded the demand to law enforcement.
Then he called me.
“What do you want to do?”
I was surprised he asked.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“They want us reacting to shame.”
“Yes.”
“So we don’t.”
I looked at the copy of the blackmail spreadsheet.
“Release the existence of the extortion attempt ourselves. Not the video. The attempt.”
Elias was quiet.
“Publicly?”
“Yes.”
“Your name will be attached.”
“It already is.”
At noon, Ashford Holdings issued a statement confirming that an unidentified party had attempted to coerce corporate decisions using illegally obtained private medical footage tied to an executive family matter.
Mercer Industrial issued a matching statement.
The market reacted badly for forty minutes.
Then differently.
The story stopped being about a messy divorce.
It became about corporate extortion.
And extortion made law enforcement interested.
By afternoon, federal investigators had contacted Daniel.
At 4:30 p.m., Martin Vale’s attorney announced that Martin denied all wrongdoing.
At 5:10, Vanessa finally resurfaced.
Not in Miami.
Not in the Cayman Islands.
She walked into a federal field office in downtown Chicago with a lawyer.
And one demand.
She wanted immunity in exchange for everything she had on Martin Vale.
May you like
There was only one problem.
According to her lawyer, Martin was not the person who had recruited her.
