Chapter 13 - The Missing Notary

Sonia Bell had not vanished.

She had incorporated a company.

Bellweather IP had been formed eight months earlier, two months before my forged signature appeared on the patent license.

Its address was a mailbox in Nevada.

Its only listed manager was Sonia.

Its secured creditor was a London investment vehicle.

Controlled by Charles Ashford.

The structure was no longer subtle.

It was layered.

Bellweather claimed Mercer had assigned the patents as collateral for a three-million-dollar bridge loan.

The loan documents carried my father’s signature.

My father had suffered a minor stroke three months before the supposed signing date and had been in rehabilitation in Wisconsin.

He could not have signed in Chicago.

For the first time since Owen’s birth, I felt something colder than anger.

They had used my father too.

I drove to see him the next morning.

He sat near the window of his rehabilitation apartment, thinner than before but alert.

When I showed him the document, his hand shook.

“I never signed this.”

“I know.”

“Martin brought papers here once.”

“When?”

“Summer. He said they were insurance renewals.”

“Did you sign anything?”

“A visitor log. Maybe one acknowledgment.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did Sonia come with him?”

He thought for a moment.

“A woman waited outside.”

“What did she look like?”

“Red hair. Glasses.”

Sonia Bell had red hair.

My father looked at Owen sleeping in the carrier beside me.

“Is Graham coming?”

“No.”

He nodded slowly.

“Good.”

That hurt in a different way.

My father had once defended the marriage because he believed it saved Mercer.

Now he looked ashamed.

“I sold you,” he said quietly.

“No.”

“I agreed to the marriage.”

“So did I.”

“You were twenty-eight and trying to save six hundred jobs.”

“So were you.”

He looked down.

“Doesn’t make it right.”

I sat beside him.

“No. But it makes it over.”

We obtained his medical records and visitor logs.

Martin Vale had visited twice during rehabilitation.

Sonia Bell had signed in as “legal courier.”

Security footage still existed.

It showed Sonia carrying a mobile notary kit.

That was enough for a court to freeze Bellweather’s lien temporarily.

Not enough to find Sonia.

Then Graham called Daniel with an idea.

Vanessa had once mentioned a cottage in Door County owned by “a friend from Mercer.”

He had assumed it was Martin.

Property records showed the cottage belonged to Sonia’s sister.

Investigators arrived that evening.

Sonia was there.

She did not run.

She asked for a lawyer.

By midnight, she was cooperating.

Her story was simple and ugly.

Martin had paid her eighty thousand dollars to notarize documents she knew were false.

Charles’s investment vehicle paid another one hundred twenty thousand after the patent lien was filed.

Vanessa had recruited her through Northline.

Sonia had kept copies of everything because she did not trust any of them.

Smart criminals called that insurance.

Prosecutors called it evidence.

Among the copies was a handwritten instruction from Martin.

CMA signature required before delivery. Use prior board consent packet as model.

CMA.

Claire Mercer Ashford.

There was also an audio memo Sonia had secretly recorded during a meeting with Martin.

Martin’s voice was clear.

“Graham doesn’t need to know the mechanics. He needs to sign the divorce, take succession, and keep blaming Claire. Charles will handle the rest.”

Sonia asked, “What if he changes his mind about the baby?”

Martin laughed.

“He won’t. Vanessa has him convinced fatherhood is another trap.”

I stopped the recording.

My hands were shaking.

Not because Graham had been manipulated.

Because manipulation only works where there is something willing to be used.

He had believed the worst of me because it was easier than questioning himself.

Daniel said, “This clears him of the forgery conspiracy.”

“It doesn’t clear him of anything that matters to me.”

He nodded.

That night, Graham sent a single message.

I HEARD THEY FOUND SONIA. I WON’T ASK YOU TO FORGIVE ME. I WILL COOPERATE WITH EVERYTHING.

I did not answer.

At 2:13 a.m., another message arrived.

Not from Graham.

From an unknown number.

A photograph.
