Chapter 15 - The Voice in the Speakers

For three seconds, the auditorium heard static and a distant voice asking whether the lead truck had turned back. Then a stage technician cut the feed.
Agent Grant spoke firmly into her radio. Personnel moved to secure the audiovisual equipment and identify who had introduced the recording. Mara stayed in her assigned position and did not touch the controls.
The interruption had not been authorized by the investigators. Mara knew that could complicate everything.
Sutter pointed at the blank screen. “This is an outrageous fabrication.”
Nobody answered immediately.
A young event contractor near the sound booth raised his hands. “Someone sent a file to the system,” he said. “I didn't mean to play it. It was loaded as the next presentation.”
Voss pushed toward him. “Who?”
“Step back,” a security officer ordered.
Voss stopped, breathing through his nose.
Agent Grant addressed the organizers. “Please remain calm. We are conducting lawful investigative activity and need access to designated materials. The event will pause.”
The crowd rose into a swarm of whispers. Mara caught sight of Lorraine Beck near the back, holding her daughter's arm. Owen stood beside them on his crutches. He had come without telling her.
Mara moved toward him during the controlled exit.
“Why are you here?” she whispered.
“Because I wanted to see the place they said my money was building.”
“You should've told me.”
“You would've said no.”
“Probably.”
Owen smiled briefly, then showed her a folded brochure. Its pages featured smiling veterans, a construction timeline, and an account of Sutter's legendary rescue. In tiny print near the back was a donor organization Mara recognized.
“Look at the fiscal sponsor,” Owen said.
It was a company tied to Price's consulting firm.
Across the lobby, Price tried to slip through a service door. Agent Malik intercepted him and spoke quietly. Price's shoulders sagged as he listened.
Voss saw the interaction and turned sharply toward Mara.
“This is your doing,” he snapped.
“No,” she said. “This is what happens when people finally check.”
He took a step toward her. Two Marines moved between them without being asked.

Then Mara's phone vibrated with a call from Denise.
“Mara,” her mother said, voice shaking, “someone broke into the garage. They took your father's box.”
