Chapter 17 - The Man in the Passenger Seat

Mara watched only the portion of the recording investigators were authorized to show her for identification. They asked her to describe the people she recognized, without leading questions.

She identified Sutter and Voss. The third officer was harder to see, but the profile and insignia were consistent with Price. She said exactly that—and no more.

The video did not prove what Price said over the radio. It did, however, undermine the official account of who was present and when. Other logs could now be checked against something concrete.

Thomas Hale gave his own statement. Then, outside the interview building, he approached Mara under the shade of an oak tree.

“I remember you,” he said.

“From the convoy?”

“You were small, angry, and covered in dust. You kept telling me the second man was still breathing.”

“His name was Corporal Bennett.”

“I know.” Hale's voice broke slightly. “He's alive because you wouldn't leave.”

Mara looked toward the traffic beyond the fence. “I didn't do it alone.”

“No. That's what always bothered me about Sutter's story. It turned a dozen people into one famous man.”

He reached into his pocket and unfolded a worn photograph. It showed a medic kneeling beside a stretcher, another Marine carrying water, and Mara barely visible at the edge.

“Everybody who helped is in this picture,” Hale said. “Somewhere.”

The photograph made Mara's throat tighten. She had avoided looking at images from that day for years.

“I don't want his medal,” she said.

“I know. You want the record to stop lying.”

That evening, a command representative informed Mara that the edited cafeteria clip had been linked to an account controlled by an outside contractor associated with Harbor Shield. The investigation into who ordered its publication was still open.

Mara sat with the information for a long time. The humiliation had been a tactic, not just a cruel impulse. They had wanted her discredited before she spoke.

A message arrived from Peter.

Dad found the family of Corporal Bennett. They want to meet you.

Then came a second message.

And Sutter's lawyers just claimed you fabricated the rescue.
