Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Pointed at the Camera

“Damian.”
The name left Beatrice Mercer’s mouth like a warning.
Tessa Reed stopped breathing.
The old woman had been half asleep seconds earlier, wrapped in the gray blanket Tessa had tucked around her after the security alert. Now Beatrice sat upright in Room 104, one trembling finger pointed directly at the black glass dome in the corner.
At the other end of the estate, Damian Vale stared at the monitor.
No one had told Beatrice the camera was there.
No one had told her Tessa’s sister had died of cancer.
And no one in the east wing was supposed to know Damian had spent the last six months reviewing sealed medical files connected to a drug trial his father’s company had buried seventeen years earlier.
Tessa slowly looked up at the camera.
“What does he know?” she asked.
Beatrice’s eyes filled with sudden terror.
“Too much,” she whispered. “And not enough.”
Damian’s hand tightened around the edge of the desk.
He had built Vale Security by assuming every threat had a pattern. Cameras, access logs, pressure sensors, encrypted phones - all of it existed because patterns could be tracked.
But Beatrice did not fit one.
Three weeks earlier, she had been found unconscious behind a bus station in Indiana with no identification, a bruised wrist, and a key sewn into the lining of her coat. The hospital discovered her name through an old fingerprint record. Damian discovered something else.
Beatrice Mercer had worked for his family when he was a child.
She had disappeared the same week his mother died.
Damian had personally ordered that Beatrice be moved to his protected medical wing. He had also personally chosen the flowers outside her window - white climbing roses, the same variety Beatrice used to grow behind the small house where he was born.
He had told no one why.
Now Beatrice looked at the camera again.
“Tell him,” she said to Tessa, “that Rosewood was never a hospital.”
Damian went cold.
Rosewood.
That name existed in only one place he knew: a locked file on his private server labeled R-17.
Tessa frowned. “What is Rosewood?”
Beatrice’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“A place where sick people went to disappear.”
Then the lights in Room 104 went out.

Every monitor on Damian’s wall turned black at the same time.
And somewhere inside his own estate, a door alarm began to scream.
