Chapter 15 - The Box Behind the Wall

The panel behind Damian’s childhood wardrobe had been painted shut.

He broke it open with a crowbar.

Dust rolled into the room.

Tessa stood behind him with a flashlight while Evelyn watched from the doorway.

Damian crawled into the narrow passage.

He was twelve again.

Small enough to disappear.

Quiet enough to hear adults confess through walls.

He reached the old cavity near the chimney and found the metal box exactly where memory said it would be.

Rust covered the lid.

The brass key from Beatrice’s coat fit perfectly.

Inside were cassette tapes, ledgers, photographs, and three sealed envelopes.

One envelope had Damian’s name.

His father’s handwriting.

Damian opened it.

Son,

If you are reading this, then Adrian has failed to destroy what I built or succeeded too well.

Do not mistake this for remorse. I did what weak men would not.

Damian stopped reading.

Tessa looked over his shoulder.

“Keep going.”

The letter described Rosewood without apology. Patients were “data assets.” Doctors were “manageable.” Regulators had prices.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Evelyn was not imprisoned because she knew about Rosewood.

She was imprisoned because she had already sent evidence to a federal investigator.

Damian looked at his mother.

“You got it out?”

“I thought I did.”

The letter continued.

The investigator’s name was Thomas Reed.

Tessa went white.

“My father.”

Damian turned to her.

Tessa could barely speak.

“My dad died in a car crash when I was ten.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

The file included a photograph of Thomas Reed meeting Evelyn in a parking garage.

Another photograph showed Adrian watching from across the street.

Tessa sat down hard on the floor.

“My father wasn’t random.”

“No,” Damian said quietly.

Grant entered the room with his phone.

“We found Adrian’s last known location.”

“Where?”

“Downtown. Vale Foundation headquarters.”

Damian looked at the tapes.

“What’s there?”

Grant swallowed.

“Tomorrow morning’s annual donor gala.”

Hundreds of executives, doctors, politicians, and press would attend.

Tessa picked up her father’s photograph.

“Adrian’s not running.”

Damian understood.

“He’s going public first.”

“With what?”

Evelyn answered.

“With a version of the truth that makes everyone else guilty and him innocent.”

Damian closed the metal box.

“Then tomorrow, we tell the real one.”

His phone vibrated.

A live news alert appeared.
