Chapter 11 - The First Name

By sunrise, Price was missing and the neighborhood was full of patrol cars. Daniel had a torn sleeve, a bruised jaw, and an official complaint filed against him by the very captain who had fired a gun in Rosie's kitchen.

Mara refused the detectives sent to question her. She gave a brief account to an attorney, Rebecca Chen, recommended by Priya. Rebecca arranged an independent medical examination and photographed the injuries Victor had caused.

“No private meetings with anyone from Price's command,” Rebecca said. “Every transfer of evidence gets logged.”

“And Daniel?” Mara asked.

“He's a witness with something to answer for. He's not your legal shield.”

That was the first useful sentence Mara had heard all night.

In Rebecca's office, they opened the memory card on an isolated computer and made verified copies. The files contained spreadsheets, security footage, and recordings from an off-the-books system called BRIDGE. Officially it tracked tips and emergency response priorities. In practice it flagged cases linked to wealthy donors, buried complaints, and rerouted seized property.

The first name on the list was not a mob boss or a crooked official. It was Helen Bennett.

Mara's mother.

Helen had died eighteen years ago after a car hit her on a dark Queens road. Her death had always been called an accident. Mara remembered Rosie's trembling hands at the funeral and Evan refusing to speak for weeks.

“What is this?” Mara whispered.

Rebecca scrolled to an archived audio file. A terrified woman's voice said, “I made copies. If anything happens to my children—”

The file cut off.

Mara recognized her mother's voice.

A second document showed a payment made the day after Helen's death, routed through a charitable foundation bearing Victor Whitcomb's signature.

Daniel sat across the table, his face ashen. “Evan didn't tell me this.”

“He knew,” Mara said. “He must have.”

A notification flashed on Rebecca's secure laptop. Someone had accessed Mara's old apartment security system remotely. A still image appeared: the hallway outside her front door.

A man stood there holding an old family photograph.

It was Evan.
