Chapter 9 - The House With No Lights

They found Daniel in the alley behind Rosie's Queens row house. He had changed into jeans and a dark coat. Without the uniform, he looked younger and far more tired.
“Two men went through the rear fence,” he said. “No marked units. They cut the electricity.”
Mara pushed past him, but he caught her elbow gently. “Wait. There may be someone inside.”
“She raised me after Mom died.”
“I know.”
“No, you don't.”
He released her.
They entered through a loose cellar window Evan had used as a teenager. In the basement, the orange lunchbox sat beneath the stairs, exactly where Mara remembered. She opened it with trembling hands. Inside were old baseball cards, a photograph of her mother, and a false bottom made from cardboard.
The red button was a tiny recording switch. Mara pressed it.
Evan's voice filled the dark: “Hey, M. If you're hearing this, I messed up the part where I was supposed to come home.”
Mara covered her mouth. He sounded exhausted, but unmistakably alive.
“Don't give this to anybody wearing a badge just because you want them to be good,” he said. “The files are in the roof of the lunchbox. Look for the seam. Trust the evidence, not my friends.”
His voice faltered. “I'm sorry I made you carry this.”
Daniel looked away.
Mara ripped open the lid lining. A thin memory card fell into her palm. It was taped to a handwritten ledger page listing dates, case numbers, victims, and payments. Some names belonged to people she remembered seeing in news reports—witnesses who had recanted, families whose emergency calls had gone unanswered, young officers punished after filing misconduct reports.
A muffled groan came from upstairs.
“Rosie?”
They found her bound to a kitchen chair, frightened but breathing. Mara cut the ties with a steak knife and held her so hard Rosie protested.
A floorboard creaked above them.
Daniel raised one hand. “Everybody down.”

From the second-floor landing came Captain Malcolm Price's voice.
“Daniel,” he called softly, “you've made me very disappointed.”
