Chapter 1 - The Hand That Never Came Down

The slap cracked across the marble foyer so hard that a caterer outside the open front doors stopped loading champagne glasses and turned toward the mansion.

Nicholas Valenti was on the floor.

Eight months earlier, men in Chicago had crossed streets rather than meet him coming the other way. Now his wheelchair lay on its side, one polished wheel still turning, while Nicholas pressed one palm against the marble and tried to pull himself upright with arms that were already shaking.

Claire Whitmore stood over him in a silver evening gown.

"You humiliated me in front of everyone," she hissed.

Blood shone at the corner of Nicholas's mouth.

"I refused to sign a paper. That's not humiliation."

Claire's face changed. The sweet smile she had worn for photographers ten minutes earlier disappeared as if someone had switched off a light.

"You were supposed to be grateful I stayed."

Her hand rose again.

It never came down.

Hannah Reed caught Claire's wrist from behind.

The medication tray Hannah had been carrying hit the floor. A glass ampule rolled beneath a table. Silverware rattled in the next room. Hannah barely heard any of it.

"Take your hand off me," Claire said.

Hannah's grip tightened.

"No."

Claire stared at her as if a chair had spoken.

"You work for him."

"Exactly. And I'm telling you that you will not touch my patient again."

Nicholas looked up.

Hannah had seen anger in his eyes before. Pride. Shame. Pain he disguised with sarcasm. What she saw now was different.

Recognition.

Because for three weeks Nicholas had been telling himself there had to be another explanation for the strange blackouts, the muscle weakness, the missing hours, and the pills that never seemed to match the pharmacy photographs.

Hannah had stopped believing in explanations.

She had two tablets sealed inside a specimen bag in her pocket.

She had photos of a medication bottle whose label had been peeled off and replaced.

And she had a recording from the previous night of Claire telling someone on the phone, "If he can still sign his own name, then you didn't give him enough."

Claire yanked her wrist free.

"Walter!" she shouted. "Get this nurse out of my house."

"It's not your house," Nicholas said quietly.

Everyone froze.

Nicholas dragged himself toward the overturned wheelchair.

Hannah knelt to help him.

"Don't," he whispered.

"You're bleeding."

"Don't help me yet."

He looked directly at Claire.

"I want to see what she does when she thinks I'm helpless."

Claire's lips parted.

Then the lights over the foyer blinked once.

Twice.

The security monitor on the wall went black.

Hannah turned toward it.

Nicholas did too.

From somewhere deeper in the mansion came the heavy click of electronic locks engaging.

Claire smiled.

May you like

And Hannah understood that the slap had not been the beginning of the danger.

It had only told them the danger was finally done hiding.
