Chapter 16 - The Crash Was Only Phase One

The full cloud archive was worse.
There were messages between Claire, Dominic, and Dr. Merritt stretching back almost a year.
They had not planned to kill Nicholas immediately.
First they wanted him frightened, injured, dependent, and legally weakened.
The crash was supposed to create chaos.
When Nicholas survived with a serious but incomplete spinal injury, they adjusted.
"Phase two," Hannah said.
Ruiz nodded.
"Medication, canceled rehabilitation, altered records, incompetency documentation."
Nicholas stared at the table.
"Why?"
Ruiz opened a financial chart.
Dominic had been stealing from three Valenti companies for years. Nicholas had scheduled an internal audit one week before the crash. Claire had quietly invested with Dominic and was buried in debt after the scheme began failing.
"If you died," Ruiz said, "some assets moved into trusts they could not control. If you lived but were declared incompetent, Dominic could seek expanded authority through the corporate board and Claire could gain personal control through marriage and power of attorney."
Nicholas looked sick.
"So keeping me alive was more profitable."
"For a while."
Dr. Merritt was arrested before dawn.
Claire was taken into custody after the lab report, recordings, and threats were connected to her devices.
As officers led her through the foyer, she stopped beside Hannah.
"You think you won because you found two pills?"
Hannah said nothing.
Claire leaned closer.
"Ask who approved your brother's surgery."
Hannah's blood ran cold.
Claire smiled.
"People in hospitals make mistakes every day."
Ruiz pulled her back.
"Keep moving."
Hannah called Ethan's cardiology team immediately.
The surgery had been moved up because a slot opened the following week.
A new preauthorization had been processed three days earlier.
Signed by an administrator Hannah did not know.
She slept in a chair beside Ethan that night.
Nicholas called twice.
She ignored the first call.
Answered the second.
"You should be resting," he said.
"So should you."
"I'm not the one whose brother is having heart surgery."
Hannah rubbed her eyes.
"Claire said someone at the hospital could hurt him."
"Ruiz has officers there."
"Officers don't read medication charts."
Nicholas was quiet.
"Then you do."
"I plan to."
"Hannah."
"What?"
"Ethan is going to be okay."
She almost snapped at him for making promises nobody could guarantee.
Then she heard his voice shake.
He was not making a prediction.
He was trying to give her the same lie she had given Ethan for years because sometimes love needed somewhere to stand.
The next morning Hannah reviewed Ethan's preoperative chart.
Everything looked normal until she reached the medication reconciliation page.
One allergy had been removed.
May you like
Ethan's most dangerous allergy.
And the change had been entered from Dr. Merritt's hospital credentials six hours after he was arrested.
